Condition

Congenital deafness

Description

The breeding programmes approved by DWV check for deafness with the BAER test, from 6 weeks and once, mandatory for, among others, the Dalmatian, the Dogo Argentino, the English Setter and the Australian Cattle Dog. The breeding advice is only positive when both parent dogs have normal hearing in both ears. For a few breeds it concerns a DNA test for a specific form, for example for the Beauceron (deafness, CDH) and the Dobermann (bilateral and unilateral deafness with vestibular dysfunction).

Inheritance pattern

For the forms with a DNA test: autosomal recessive, according to the breeding programme. For deafness found with the BAER test, the breeding programmes do not state a mode of inheritance.

Breeds in which this condition occurs

We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit).
