Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)
Description
The breeding programmes approved by DWV for short-nosed breeds, such as the French Bulldog, the Pug and the English Bulldog, put it this way: BOAS is a hereditary condition, and there is currently no generally recognised scientific test that vets can carry out. In the meantime, dogs with severe breathing problems, too short a stop and narrow nostrils (stenotic nares), diagnosed by the vet, are not used for breeding. Breeders taking part in the breeding programme commit to cooperating with the studies of the Breeding Healthy Pets project.
Inheritance pattern
According to these breeding programmes, BOAS is a hereditary condition. They do not state a mode of inheritance.
Breeds in which this condition occurs
We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit). View the official breeding programmes
