Chondrodystrophy and disc disease (IVDD)
Description
The breeding programmes approved by DWV call this chondrodystrophy and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), a condition of the intervertebral discs. The examination is a lateral X-ray (RX: lateral, C1 to Cd1 must be assessable), once and from 2 years in most breeding programmes. It is mandatory for, among others, the Dachshund, the French Bulldog, the Pug, the Beagle and the Welsh Corgi, and recommended for the Lhasa Apso and the Tibetan Spaniel. The result is a grade based on the number of calcifications in the intervertebral discs: grade 0 (none), grade 1 (1 to 2), grade 2 (3 to 4) and grade 3 (5 or more). In most of these breeding programmes the breeding advice is positive for 0 with 0, 0 with 1, 0 with 2 and 1 with 1, conditionally positive for 0 with 3, 1 with 2 and 2 with 2, and the other combinations are subject to a breeding ban.
Breeds in which this condition occurs
We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit). View the official breeding programmes
