Mitral valve disease (MVD)
Description
Mitral valve disease (MVD) is a condition of the mitral valve of the heart. In nine breeding programmes approved by DWV, MVD is an examination: mandatory for, among others, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bull Terrier, and recommended for, among others, the Shih Tzu and the Dachshund. The examination starts with auscultation from 1 year, valid for 1 year in most of these breeding programmes; if a heart murmur of grade 1 or higher is found, an echocardiography follows. For auscultation, the breeding advice is only positive when both parent dogs have grade 0. In most of these breeding programmes, the mitral valve receives, for echocardiography, a class from A (no abnormalities) to E (severe abnormalities); the breeding advice is positive for, among others, A with A, A with B, A with C and B with B, and conditionally positive for A with D and B with C.
