Condition

Primary glaucoma

Description

In glaucoma, the pressure inside the eye rises. The breeding programmes approved by DWV use a DNA test for primary glaucoma, from birth and once: for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG), mandatory for the Basset Fauve de Bretagne and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen and recommended for the Beagle, and for the Shar Pei a combined DNA test for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Lens Luxation (POAG/PLL). In thirty breeding programmes the general eye examination also assesses the iridocorneal angle (ICAA) by gonioscopy. More on this under 'Gonioscopy'.

Inheritance pattern

For the DNA tests: autosomal recessive, according to the breeding programme. A carrier has a 50% chance of passing the variant on to its offspring; an affected dog passes it on to all its offspring.

We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit).
