(Sub)aortic stenosis (SAS)
Description
In (sub)aortic stenosis (SAS), the passage to the aorta is narrowed. In several breeding programmes approved by DWV, for example for the Boxer, the Dogue de Bordeaux and the Bouvier des Flandres, SAS is checked by echocardiography, as part of the examination for congenital heart conditions. The result depends on the measured pressure gradient: clear (under 20 mmHg), mild (20 to 49 mmHg), moderate (50 to 80 mmHg) or severe (over 80 mmHg). In most of these breeding programmes the breeding advice is positive for clear with clear, conditionally positive for clear with mild, clear with moderate and mild with mild, and the other combinations are subject to a breeding ban.

We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit). View the official breeding programmes
