Screening Eyes

General eye examination

Description

In the breeding programmes approved by DWV, the general eye examination is the examination for eye conditions. Which eye conditions count is set out in the breed's breeding programme. In the Labrador Retriever programme, for example, they include cataract, collie eye anomaly (CEA), corneal dystrophy and distichiasis.

How the examination is carried out

Age: at least 1 year. The result is valid for 2 years.

How to read the result

For each eye condition the dog receives a result, such as clear, undetermined or suspect, or not clear. The breeding advice depends on the combination of both parent dogs and differs per eye condition. For congenital cataract, in most breeding programmes it is only positive when both parent dogs are clear; the other combinations are subject to a breeding ban. A breeding programme allows a maximum number of conditionally positive results. Eye conditions are not taken into account for this.

Breeds for which this screening is recommended

We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit).
