Screening Eyes

Gonioscopy

Description

Gonioscopy is an eye examination of the iridocorneal angle, the drainage angle of the eye. It is not a separate examination in the breeding programmes approved by DWV, but in thirty breeding programmes it is part of the general eye examination, under the name iridocorneal angle abnormality (ICAA). This applies to, among others, the Border Collie, the Leonberger, the Whippet and the Tibetan Spaniel.

How the examination is carried out

Age and validity follow those of the general eye examination: at least 1 year, valid for 2 years. For glaucoma, a few breeding programmes also use a DNA test, for example for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG).

How to read the result

The result is clear, mild, moderate or severe, based on the pectinate ligament and how open the iridocorneal angle is (open, narrow or closed). The breeding advice is positive for clear with clear, conditionally positive for clear with mild, clear with moderate and mild with mild, and the other combinations are subject to a breeding ban.

Breeds for which this screening is recommended

We are rebuilding the health information for each breed from the official breeding programme of Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders). Until then, you can find the mandatory and recommended health tests for this breed in the breeding programmes under the Flemish Breeding Decree (Fokkerijbesluit).
