Training the Standard Poodle: intelligent, sensitive and eager to learn

The Standard Poodle has an image that does not always do justice to its true nature. Behind its elegant appearance and artfully clipped coat lies one of the most intelligent and hard-working dog breeds in the world. In the past, Standard Poodles were used as hunting dogs for waterfowl, and that work ethic and sharp mind have never faded. Anyone who brings a Standard Poodle into their home will find a dog that loves to learn and to cooperate, but which also has clear expectations of its owner.

A dog that wants to work together

Standard Poodles are often mentioned in the same breath as Border Collies when it comes to intelligence. They learn new commands in a flash and, what’s more, remember them for a long time. This makes training them easier in many ways than with less eager-to-learn breeds, but it also presents a challenge: a Standard Poodle that doesn’t receive enough mental stimulation will seek out its own ways to occupy its time. This can manifest as excessive barking, destructive behaviour or a dog that does its own thing during a walk.

Precisely because this dog loves to cooperate, it responds exceptionally well to training methods based on positive reinforcement. Reward desired behaviour with your voice, attention or a tasty treat, and the Standard Poodle will often pick up the pattern after just a few repetitions.

It pays to start early

As with most breeds, the earlier you start with socialisation and basic obedience training, the smoother the process will be. From an early age, gently introduce your puppy to other dogs, people, sounds and situations. Standard Poodles are often naturally a little reserved towards strangers, and a good socialisation period helps prevent this from developing into fear or excessive vigilance later in life.

  • Start with short, playful training sessions lasting a few minutes
  • Vary the environment so that the puppy learns to cope with distractions
  • Introduce sounds such as vacuum cleaners and traffic, step by step
  • Introduce the puppy to brushing and grooming from an early age

Sensitive to the tone of your voice

An important point to bear in mind when training a Standard Poodle is its sensitivity. These dogs are highly attuned to their owner’s mood and emotions. Harsh corrections or an angry tone often backfire: rather than learning more quickly, the dog becomes insecure or withdrawn. Consistent and calm behaviour on your part yields much better results than taking a strict approach.

A Standard Poodle does not learn through coercion, but through trust. Build that trust and the rest will follow naturally.

A mental challenge alongside physical training

As well as obedience training, it is a good idea to provide the Standard Poodle with mental stimulation. This could include tracking games, puzzles that require the dog to think for itself, or teaching tricks that go beyond the standard commands. Many Standard Poodles excel at dog sports such as agility, obedience and flyball, which engage both body and mind. These activities not only strengthen the bond between dog and owner, but also ensure a content and calm dog at home.

Consistency is key

Because the Standard Poodle learns so quickly, it is particularly important to be consistent with rules and expectations. If the dog learns that certain behaviour is sometimes allowed and sometimes not, this creates confusion that unnecessarily complicates training. Agree on the same commands and rules within the household, and make sure everyone sticks to them. That way, the dog knows exactly where it stands, and that brings peace of mind to both ends of the lead.

With the right approach, the Standard Poodle grows into a remarkably loyal, obedient and pleasant companion, who is just as happy to go on adventures as to lie quietly beside you on the sofa.
