Aussiedoodle
The Aussiedoodle is a cross between an Australian Shepherd and a Poodle: a clever, active and affectionate family dog, often with a curly coat and merle markings. It grows to small or medium size, depending on the size of the Poodle used.
Health
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders) for this breed (yet). Without an approved breeding programme, no Flemish pedigree can be issued, but a lineage certificate can. Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs.

Considerations when buying
There is no approved breeding programme from Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen for this breed (yet). Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs. Ask the breeder which health tests the parent dogs have had, and ask for the results. An Aussiedoodle needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation every day, as it descends from a working herding dog. The coat can be curly or wavy and needs regular brushing and a trim every few months.
Questions for the breeder
- Which health tests have the parent dogs had, and may I see the results?
- Is the puppy merle, and were both parent dogs merle?
- Does the puppy get a pedigree or a certificate of descent, and from which association?
- How are the puppies socialised before they go to their new home?
Breed-specific challenges
As the Aussiedoodle is a cross, size, coat and character can differ from puppy to puppy, even within one litter. Without a task it soon gets bored and will find its own occupation. For a merle puppy, ask whether two merle parent dogs were not mated, as this increases the risk of deafness and eye problems. There is no approved breeding programme for the Aussiedoodle, so ask which health tests the parent dogs have had, as Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends.
