Group 10 · Sighthounds
Azawakh
The Azawakh is a slender, long-legged sighthound from the Sahel, traditionally kept by nomadic peoples as a hunter and guardian. It is dignified, sensitive and very loyal to its own people.
Health
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders) for this breed (yet). Without an approved breeding programme, no Flemish pedigree can be issued, but a lineage certificate can. Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs.

Considerations when buying
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen for this breed (yet). Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs. Ask the breeder which health tests the parent dogs have had, and ask for the results. An Azawakh needs daily walks and regular chances to sprint freely in a securely fenced area. It feels the cold quickly, so a coat can help in cold weather. Its short coat is easy to look after.
Questions for the breeder
- Which health tests have the parent dogs had, and may I see the results?
- Will the puppy receive a pedigree or a lineage certificate, and from which association?
- How are the puppies socialised before they go to their new home?
Breed-specific challenges
The Azawakh is closely bonded to its own people and aloof with strangers. As a sighthound it reacts strongly to movement. It is sensitive and needs calm, patient training and plenty of socialisation.
