Mudi
The Mudi is a medium-sized Hungarian farm dog with a wavy coat and upright ears, also found in merle. It is versatile, clever and hard-working, and an excellent sports dog.
Health
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders) for this breed (yet). Without an approved breeding programme, no Flemish pedigree can be issued, but a lineage certificate can. Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs.

Considerations when buying
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen for this breed (yet). Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs. Ask the breeder which health tests the parent dogs have had, and ask for the results. A Mudi needs plenty of daily exercise and a job, such as herding, agility or other dog sports. Its wavy coat is easy to look after with a weekly brush.
Questions for the breeder
- Which health tests have the parent dogs had, and may I see the results?
- Will the puppy receive a pedigree or a lineage certificate, and from which association?
- How are the puppies socialised before they go to their new home?
Breed-specific challenges
The Mudi is clever, alert and watchful, and can bark a lot. It needs structure, socialisation and enough challenge. Merle occurs in this breed: ask the breeder about the colour of both parent dogs. In the breeding programmes of breeds such as the Australian Shepherd and the Border Collie, a mating of two merle parent dogs is subject to a breeding ban.
