Group 6 · Scent hounds
Otterhound
The Otterhound is a large, rough-coated English scent hound, originally bred for otter hunting and an excellent swimmer. It is cheerful, friendly and exuberant, and one of the rarest British breeds.
Health
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (Animal Welfare Flanders) for this breed (yet). Without an approved breeding programme, no Flemish pedigree can be issued, but a lineage certificate can. Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs.

Considerations when buying
There is no breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen for this breed (yet). Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen strongly recommends carrying out the health tests on the parent dogs. Ask the breeder which health tests the parent dogs have had, and ask for the results. The Otterhound is a pack hound with great stamina: it needs long daily walks and scent work, ideally in a hunting setting or dog sports. Only let it off the lead in a well-fenced area. Its short coat is easy to look after.
Questions for the breeder
- Which health tests have the parent dogs had, and may I see the results?
- Will the puppy receive a pedigree or a lineage certificate, and from which association?
- How are the puppies socialised before they go to their new home?
Breed-specific challenges
As a pack hound it likes living with other dogs and does not like being alone; it may then bark or howl loudly. Once it is on a scent, it no longer hears you. It suits hunters best, or people with plenty of time and space.
