Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois): the character and temperament of this intelligent working dog

The Malinois, one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd Dog, is known as one of the most driven and intelligent dog breeds in existence. This short-haired, fawn-coloured dog with a black mask is used worldwide by police, the military and rescue services, but is also gaining popularity as a family dog. To understand whether this dog suits your lifestyle, it is important to have a good understanding of its character and temperament.

A working dog through and through

The Malinois was bred to work, and this is ingrained in its very being. This dog has tremendous drive, is alert and reacts lightning-fast to stimuli in its surroundings. Whilst some breeds are content with a daily walk, the Malinois needs much more: mental stimulation, structure and a task to focus on. Without sufficient activity, this dog may become restless, destructive or bark excessively, simply because its energy has no outlet.

Intelligent and eager to learn

Few breeds are as quick to learn as the Malinois. These dogs pick up commands in a flash and remember them for a long time. This intelligence is a great advantage when it comes to training, but it also requires an owner who remains consistent and creative. Boredom is a real risk with a dog this clever: repetition without variety quickly loses its effect. Training sessions should therefore be short, varied and challenging.

  • Very eager to learn and keen to work
  • Strong guarding instincts and alertness
  • High-energy, suitable for active families
  • Loyal and devoted to its owner
  • May be reserved towards strangers

Loyalty and bonding

Malinois form an intense bond with their owners. This loyalty makes them fantastic companions for people who are willing to devote a lot of time and attention to their dog, but it also means that the dog does not thrive if left alone frequently. Social isolation can lead to stress-related behaviour more quickly in this breed than in less attached breeds. Anyone bringing a Malinois into their home is choosing a dog that wants to be closely involved in everyday life.

The Malinois isn’t just a dog you have ‘around’; it’s a dog that revolves around you, and one that you revolve around.

Vigilance and alertness

By nature, the Malinois is a vigilant dog that keeps a close watch on its surroundings. This makes it an excellent guardian of home and family, but it also means that early and extensive socialisation is essential. Without proper exposure to different situations, people and stimuli, this vigilance can develop into excessive suspicion or nervousness. A well-socialised Malinois, by contrast, is stable, confident and able to distinguish clearly between normal situations and those that are genuinely cause for concern.

Not suitable for everyone

Although the Malinois has wonderful qualities, this is definitely not a breed for beginners or for people with a quiet lifestyle. The combination of high energy, keen intelligence and strong will requires an experienced owner who knows how to provide structure and leadership without being harsh. In the right hands, the Malinois develops into a fantastic, versatile companion. In the wrong environment, however, it can develop behavioural problems that are difficult for both the dog and the family.

If you’re thinking of getting a Malinois, talk to experienced breeders, trainers or behaviourists about what this dog really requires from you. And if you have any doubts about behaviour or health, it’s always wise to consult a vet or a certified dog behaviourist.
