Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: an ideal canine friend for families with children?

Anyone looking for a dog that’s suitable for a family with children will soon come across the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This friendly little breed is known for its gentle nature, sociable disposition and adaptability. But is this dog really as suitable for families with children as is often claimed? We’ve listed its key characteristics below.

A friendly and affectionate nature

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was bred to be a companion dog, and it certainly shows. The breed is naturally friendly, affectionate and loves to bond with people. Cavaliers rarely show any aggressive tendencies and are usually patient, even when children are playing a bit boisterously. This trait makes them particularly well suited to households where things can get a bit noisy at times.

What’s more, Cavaliers often love to cuddle and be close to their family. For children looking for a loyal companion to play with or sit next to whilst being read to, that’s a big plus.

Adaptability in a busy family

Families with children often lead a dynamic life full of activities, noise and change. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adapts relatively easily to these circumstances. The breed is not easily stressed by a busy environment and can enjoy both an active afternoon outdoors and a quiet evening on the sofa.

  • Fits in well with a family life full of activities and visitors
  • Relatively small in size, meaning the dog is suitable even for a family with limited space
  • A playful character that matches the energy of young children
  • Quiet moments are just as valued as playtime

Key points to note

Although the Cavalier generally gets on well with children, it is important to always supervise young children when they are with dogs. Even a gentle breed can become overstimulated by rough play, tail-pulling or sudden movements. You should therefore teach children from an early age how to treat a dog with respect: stroke it gently, do not take toys away from it, and leave the dog in peace whilst it is eating or sleeping.

The Cavalier is also a sensitive breed. Loud noises or too much commotion at once can make the dog feel insecure. A quiet spot where the dog can retreat to when things get a bit too much is therefore no luxury at all in a family with children.

A Cavalier grows up to be a true family dog, provided its boundaries and sensitivities are respected.

Need for attention and company

Cavaliers do not like being left on their own for long periods. They form strong bonds with their family and like to be involved in everyday life. For families where there’s always someone at home, such as those with young children who haven’t started school yet, this is often not a problem. Working families with older children can make sure the dog gets enough company and walks, for example through a dog sitter, doggy day care or a neighbour.

Health and care

The breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen requires, among other things, a heart examination for mitral valve disease (MVD) and an MRI for syringomyelia for both parent dogs, and recommends palpation of the kneecap. So ask the breeder for the results of the mandatory examinations of both parent dogs. Regular check-ups and good care, together with the necessary love and attention from the family, contribute to a long and healthy life.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a wonderful addition to many families with children, provided there is sufficient guidance and respect for the dog’s needs. If you have any concerns about your dog’s health or behaviour, always consult a vet for personalised advice.
