Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: health according to the breeding programme and good care

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a loving, sociable companion dog. The hereditary conditions that breeding in Flanders keeps an eye on are set out in the breeding programme approved by Dierenwelzijn Vlaanderen (DWV). This article sums up what that programme requires and how to look after your Cavalier well.

What the Cavalier breeding programme requires

According to the breeding programme, these examinations must be carried out on both parent dogs:

  • Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia (SM): an MRI, from 1 year and once.
  • Mitral valve disease (MVD): auscultation and, if a heart murmur of grade 1 or higher is found, an echocardiography, from 1 year and valid for 1 year.
  • A DNA test, from birth and once, for congenital keratoconjunctivitis sicca and ichthyosiform dermatosis (DE-CC), degenerative myelopathy (DM) and episodic falling syndrome (EF).

The programme also recommends palpation of the kneecap for patellar luxation, from 1 year, and a general eye examination, from 1 year and valid for 2 years.

The breeding programme also mentions BOAS: dogs with severe breathing problems, too short a stop and narrow nostrils (stenotic nares), diagnosed by the vet, are not used for breeding. More under BOAS.

Grooming

The silky coat needs regular brushing, especially behind the ears and under the paws. Check the ears at the same time and keep the eyes clean. That way you notice changes quickly.

Weight and exercise

  • Give measured portions at fixed times.
  • Limit snacks and rewards during training.
  • Provide daily walks and playtime.
  • Weigh your dog regularly.

When buying

Ask for the results of the mandatory examinations of both parent dogs and check that the heart examination is still valid. Also ask whether the puppy will receive a Flemish pedigree from a recognised breed registry association.

Notice anything unusual about your dog? Always consult a vet.
